Paul Dale on the Birmingham Post blog has an update on the efforts to get rid of the stupid big telly in Chamberlain Square. Apparently the Birmingham Civic Society are the prime movers in getting the council to move it away from the Town Hall. Their suggestion of installing it at the BullRing is eminently sensible, if it has to go somewhere. The chap in charge is one Stephen Hughes should you want to suggest to him they just get rid of the darned thing. His email is stephen.hughes@birmingham.gov.uk

Seems to me that the problem is not the screen itself, but the tedious stuff that's shown on it. I guess it has to be high up to shield the public from the electricals, and shield the screen from the vandals. How about moving it into the Ikon Gallery; then they'd be able to cover interactive new-media work properly, instead of using little 'tellies-in-cupboards'?
The problem is really one of noise and mental polution. Public TVs are just a bad idea all round no matter how big or small they are.
I can understand it for an event like football or whatnot but as an ambient thing - bad idea.
As for more interesting content, that's not going to happen. It needs to be funded and interesting stuff doesn't come with money. Tedious mind-rotting stuff does. Witness the Sky News monopoly on Central Trains.
That's a shame, I actually like the TV where it is. The bowl shape of the steps is perfect for large-scale public broadcasts of events, it'll be great when the Olympics is on for people who are out and about but can't get to London, and for other big things too.
I enjoyed a good forty-five minutes of just sitting idly on the steps eating my lunch before I went into Uni (in the Conservatoire), it's ideally placed in my opinion! The sound doesn't really carry that far anyway given the way the PA system's been configured (and the acoustic of the area), plus it's shielded from the elements somewhat by being up against the Town Hall. There's not really many better places you could put it, particularly since it's supposed to be for the public - and that area in Brum Centre is one of the best places for the screen to go which is also convenient when there's more than a handful of people watching.
So, +1 vote to keep it where it is from me I'm afraid!
